The college now consists of four departments: Department of Mechanics& Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Environmental Science& Engineering and Department of Architecture.
Up to now, the college has integrated various disciplines including engineering mechanics, civil engineering, environmental science, architecture, planning and garden engineering. It’s characterized by its strong strength of technology& engineering combined with humanity, science with art, research with practice and teaching with innovation. It serves as an international frontrunner in scientific research, and also endeavours to boost local economic development in social services. With 4 Doctor's degree authorization centre
s of first-level discipline, 7 Master’s degree authorization centres of first-level discipline, 3 Professional Master’s degree authorization centres and 10 Undergraduate degree programmes, the college has become a well-known fostering base for highly specialized talents in engineering mechanics, civil engineering, architecture, environmental protection, etc. In more than 20 years, the college has delivered more than 1550 graduates of PhD and master degree and over 6000 undergraduates. A number of the graduates have developed into leaders of their fields and backbones of enterprises and public institutions.
The running principle of the college is “scholarship-based, teaching-led self-discipline and social commitment for bigger accomplishment with serenity of mind”. The aim of the college is to cultivate a pool of talents with independent thinking and innovative spirits; teaching staff with academic enthusiasm, enriched mind and exemplary behaviour; a scholar group with distinctive characteristics, close synergy and significant influence. It will grasp every opportunity to accelerate the healthy, harmonious and sustainable development of the college. We sincerely invite students and outstanding scholars from all over the world to study or teach here. The members of the college are striving to construct a world-class academic institution, together with friends from all sectors of the society.
Department of Mechanics& Engineering
The history of Department of Mechanics& Engineering can be dated back to the year of 1944. In 1948 courses of mechanics were set, and in 1957 Department of Mathematics and Mechanics was established, with the major of engineering mechanics for undergraduates. After the adjustment from 1964 to 1976, the engineering mechanics resumed enrollment in 1977. In 1979 the Department of Engineering Mechanics was established to admit graduate students majoring in mechanics. In July 1986, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, a Doctor's degree authorization center on solid mechanics (including research of biomechanics) was set up in the third batch of PhD authorization centers. In 2005 it was renamed as Department of Mechanics& Engineering. In 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, one doctor's degree authorization center of Mechanics as first-level discipline was formed. In 2007, a postdoctoral research station of Sichuan University on Mechanics was set up.
This Department now has 4 teaching and research offices (engineering mechanics, fluid mechanics, biomechanics and basic mechanics), 2 national key secondary disciplines (solid mechanics and biomedical engineering), 2 Doctor's degree authorization centers of first-level discipline (mechanics and biomedical engineering), 2 postdoctoral research stations (mechanics and biomedical engineering) and 1 national intensive refresher course of engineering mechanics. The Department is now an outstanding fostering base for highly specialized personnel of mechanics in western China and even across the nation.
Department of Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering was firstly founded in 1945, and began to enroll undergraduates majoring in Industrial and Civil Building in 1986. In 1987, two majors—Urban Construction and Plumbing—were added. In 2011 the major of Construction Costs was added. In 2012, the major of Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering formally began to recruit students. Now the Department has four undergraduate majors including Civil Engineering, Plumbing Science and Engineering, Construction Cost, Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering.
This Department now has 3 teaching and research offices (Structural Engineering, Plumbing, Construction Management), 3 laboratories (Structural Engineering, Plumbing, Comprehensive Laboratory of Project Management). It also has a Doctor’s degree authorization center of Civil Engineering
as first-level discipline, and the Civil Engineering is rated as a key discipline of Sichuan Province; Geotechnical Engineering of secondary discipline as a state-level key discipline. The discipline of Civil Engineering is a featured discipline of the Ministry of Education, and listed in the “Excellent Engineer Cultivation Project” of Sichuan Province. Civil Engineering of first-level discipline is a pillar subject of the creative platform “Interdisciplinary Centre of Major Projects Safety and Disaster Mechanics“ in 985 Program of Southwest Resources and Environment & Disaster Prevention and Control of Sichuan University. Moreover, the discipline acts as a national key training base and research centre of civil engineering deployed in western China.
Department of Environmental Science and Engineering
The history of Department of Environmental Science and Engineering can be dated back to the year 1977. In 1980 a training course on Environmental Protection Engineering was held. In 1985 the discipline of Environmental Monitoring was set up. In 1986 the discipline of Environmental Engineering was launched to enroll undergraduate students. The Department now includes 2 undergraduate disciplines (Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science), 3 teaching and research offices (Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environment and Sustainable Development Public Courses), laboratories of Environmental Science and Engineering, a Doctor's Degree Authorization Centre of Environmental Science and Engineering as first-level discipline. The discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering is one of the key disciplines of “985 Program” and “211 Program” of Sichuan University.
This Department has National Flue Gas Desulfurization Research Center, Sino-US Jiuzhaigou Valley Environment and Sustainable Development International Joint Laboratory and Western Resources and Environment On-Line Cooperation Research Center of the Ministry of Education. In recent years, international exchanges and cooperation have been enhanced. The Department has introduced Double-Master Core Courses of Environmental Engineering from RWTH Aachen University, joint training project for undergraduates with University of Washington. Also, this Department carries out substantial research in collaboration with Institute of Waste of RWTH Aachen University and Environmental Science and Engineering Research Institute of Nanyang Technological University.
Department of Architecture
This Department was founded in 1988, and began its formal enrollment in 1989. It now includes 3 National First-level Disciplines (Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture), 3 undergraduate disciplines (Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture), with the duration of undergraduate education up to 5 years. There are 3 first-level Master’s Degree Authorization Centers (Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture), 2 provincial key disciplines (Architecture Design and Theory, Architecture Technology and Science), second-level Doctor’s Degree Authorization Centers of Human Settlement intended to recruit mainly master graduates in disciplines such as Architecture and Urban Planning for doctor degree.
In recent years, the graduates of the Department of Architecture have won a number of international awards. The international exchange camp staffed with the representative of Architecture is exerting a growing influence internationally. The philosophy of schooling is to cultivate high-caliber comprehensive talents with solid theoretical basis, integrated innovation and application capability in arts and technology, with capability of undertaking independently the technologic and managerial works of design, planning, research and protection of large and medium-sized public buildings.
