Mechanics is the study of forces that act on bodies and the resultant motion that those bodies experience. With roots in physics and mathematics, Engineering Mechanics is the basis of all the mechanical sciences: civil engineering, materials science and engineering. Engineering Mechanics provides the 揵uilding blocks?of statics, dynamics, strength of materials, and fluid dynamics. Engineering mechanics is the discipline devoted to the solution of mechanics problems through the integrated application of mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles. Special emphasis is placed on the physical principles underlying modern engineering design. As a result, Engineering Mechanics students are prepared for careers at the forefront of a wide variety of fields, including the aerospace, electronics, automotive, manufacturing, software, and computer industries. The curriculum also provides excellent preparation for graduate school in many different engineering disciplines.
The history of Department of Mechanics& Engineering in Sichuan University can be dated back to the year of 1944. In 1948 courses of mechanics were set, and in 1957 Department of Mathematics and Mechanics was established, with the major of engineering mechanics for undergraduates. After the adjustment from 1964 to 1976, the engineering mechanics resumed enrollment in 1977. In 1979 the Department of Engineering Mechanics was established to admit graduate students majoring in mechanics. In July 1986, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, a Doctor's degree authorization center on solid mechanics (including research of biomechanics) was set up in the third batch of PhD authorization centers. In 2005 it was renamed as Department of Mechanics& Engineering. In 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, one doctor's degree authorization center of Mechanics as first-level discipline was formed. In 2007, a postdoctoral research station of Sichuan University on Mechanics was set up.
This Department now has 4 teaching and research offices (engineering mechanics, fluid mechanics, biomechanics and basic mechanics), 2 national key secondary disciplines (solid mechanics and biomedical engineering), 2 Doctor's degree authorization centers of first-level discipline (mechanics and biomedical engineering), 2 postdoctoral research stations (mechanics and biomedical engineering) and 1 national intensive refresher course of engineering mechanics. The Department is now an outstanding fostering base for highly specialized personnel of mechanics in western China and even across the nation.
 
Civil Engineering
The history of the Civil Engineering discipline in our department dates back to 1944. Now it encompasses four sub-disciplines including Building Engineering, Bridge Engineering, Road Engineering and Engineering Management. All the academic programs in Civil Engineering are nationally accredited. Our students are highly recruited and our graduates are widely regarded as among the most work-ready young engineers in the country.
There are 50 academic staff working in Civil Engineering, including1 distinguished professor in National 搕he Thousand Talents Plan? 1 committee member of Teaching and Guidance Committee of Civil Engineering and Engineering Management of Ministry of Education, 2 academic leaders of Sichuan Province, 2 reserves for provincial academic leaders, 14 professors, 19associate professors, 17 lecturers.
Civil Engineering is a provincial key discipline and Geotechnical Engineering, a sub-branch of Civil Engineering is listed in the national key disciplines. Also, Civil Engineering is a featured major of Ministry of Education. The department of Civil Engineering has the doctor degree and master degree authorization programs of Civil Engineering, including research fields in Structural Engineering, Engineering Management, Geotechnical Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Municipal Engineering, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineering, etc. Civil Engineering is also a pillar subject of the creative platform interdisciplinary Centre of Safety and Disaster Mechanics belonging to 985 Program of Southwest Resources and Environment & Disaster Prevention and Control of Sichuan University. Moreover, the department also acts as a national key training base and research center of civil engineering deploying in western China, specifically.
The Civil Engineering department has good international collaborations on Civil Engineering education such as the 2+2 undergraduate union training program with Clausthal University of Technology, Germany, the 1st international union training program of Sichuan University. We have built long-term research collaboration with Clausthal University of Technology, Germany, Monash University, Australia, and other over 20 international universities or institutes worldwide. The international exchange activities have greatly expanded the global horizon of students in Civil Engineering.
All the staff of the department has continuously served for the society actively and diligently, undertaking plenty of engineering consultations and research projects, providing life-long engineering educations for structural engineers, architects, moderators, appraisers, etc, in all civil fields in Sichuan province.
 
Construction Management
The major of Construction Management (CM) in Sichuan University was established in 2011, which was to meet the greatly increasing demand from the society as well as the industry. It was one major within the civil engineering management direction before. The major is aimed at training more inter-disciplinary talents with qualified construction management skills for the industry as well as the society. By now, the CM major has already developed close connections with relevant universities within and outside of China, industrial associations, institutions as well as corporations. For example, the CM major has established a strategic cooperation with the international organization RICS for related subject authentication. It is the first university within the southwest area in China that has realized the international authentication after Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Southeast University. It has formed official agreement with the Nottingham Trent University (NTU) to establish a training model of 3+1+1, which aims at providing teachers and students with a high standard international communication and learning platform through co-training programs in China and abroad. Several students?internship bases have been established with major institutions and corporations such as the China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute Corp. Ltd. (CSWADI), The Architectural Institute of CAEP, Sichuan Huaxin Corporate, where supervisor system has established outside the school to form a co-training model between the university and corporations firstly. Besides, the CM major has created close connections with the CM association, Sichuan Institute of Building Research, Sichuan Society of Architects and Civil Engineers, Sichuan Provincial Association for Construction  Project Management Association etc, where the university can have a big role playing. Within the CM major, students?creativity and the entrepreneurship are being trained. The nation-wide BIM and Project Management Competitions are the best practice opportunities for improving students?innovation, entrepreneurship as well as their practice skills.
 
Water Supply and Drainage Engineering
The subject provides student with detailed knowledge of: (1) urban water supply and drainage, (2) sewage and water reticulation system, (3) building water supply and drainage,(4)water pollution control programs, (5) protection of water resources, (6) advanced technologies used in water and wastewater treatment processes, etc. After the completion of the subject, students will understand fundamentals of water supply and wastewater disposal, develop the design concepts for drinking water and sewage treatment plants and know about new technologies in water quality and re-use objectives. After graduate with this major, graduatewill capable of planning, designing, constructing, and doing research in WaterSupply and Drainage Engineering, and they can join in environmental protection departments, Architectural Design and Research Institutes, Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute, Industrial and Mining enterprises, and enterprises engaged in Water Supply and Drainage project, etc.
 
Landscape Architecture
The Landscape Architecture (LA) major of Sichuan University has grown for more than 10 years. The undergraduate course (Duration: 5 years) of LA design (architecture oriented) was established in College of Architecture and Environment in 2004.Early in 2003,the undergraduate course (Duration: 4 years) of LA (plants and gardening planning and design oriented) was founded in College of Life Sciences, and it passed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation, which was held by Ministry of Education in 2006.As 揟he Undergraduate Majors Catalogue of Chinese Universities (2012? released, the LA (plants and gardening planning and design oriented)in College of Life Sciences was formally reorganized to the College of Architecture and Environment as one major, which was renamed as LA (Duration: 5 years) according to the catalogue. Meanwhile, the teaching stuff also moved to College of Architecture and Environment.
Landscape Architecture is a comprehensive discipline which is closely related to natural science (including geography, climate, plants, ecology etc.), humanities (including social science, economy, philosophy, history, etc.), and engineering technology. Sichuan University is located in the core zone of ecological and environmental protection area in China. This area is also the transitional region from the second step to the third ladder of China in geography, which has critical position in national ecologic strategy. The critical ecological position and abundant landscape resources have laid the location advantages for the development of this discipline. Moreover, Sichuan University抯 multi-discipline platform (including architecture, urban and rural planning, ecology, civil engineering, environmental science,and art etc.) providesa comprehensive advantage for us, which is very rare in LA education field in China.
Over the decades, Sichuan University is committed to LA抯 discipline construction and development, and we have achieved great outcomes both in teaching and research areas. In the national first-class discipline evaluation for LA in 2012, we ranked the 33rd place based on the overall evaluation. For the authorized MLA ranking part, we achieved the 16th place among the 21 universities, and took the 2nd place within universities that belong to Sichuan Province.
In recent years, the teachers and students have been conducted a large number of research and practical programs in the following fields: the new rural landscape planning and design, urban and rural landscape planning and design, landscape planning and design for mountainous region inhibited by minorities in Southwest China, post-earthquake reconstruction of ecology and landscape planning, scenic area planning, and traditional cultural landscape planning among others. These results have been widely recognized by the society.
We dedicate to cultivate the LA professionals for the development and construction in China, especially the much-needed talents for the western China. The undergraduate students actively participated in multiple design competitions and won many rewards, such as the National University LA Graduation Exhibition, Yuanye Rewards, etc. The MLA course has four main disciplinedirections. They are landscape planning and design, landscape design, application of landscape plants, and landscape ecology. The above four discipline directions cover multiple practical areas, such as scenic area planning, nature reservation area planning, landscape plant design and application, land use planning, urban green system planning, and regional cultural landscape protection among others.The graduate students mainly focus on research and over 100 papers have been published. They also involved in amount of practical and scientific research projects.
Concerning the international cooperation, we have built good relationships with world famous universities from the United States, UK, Netherlands, and Denmark.
 
Urban-Rural Planning
Urban-Rural Planning science assumes the design and management tasks of urbanization, local and regional development, urban and rural construction, urban and rural social services and physical planning and so on, which is an important subject area for the national economy and social development.
Modern urban planning is based on the integrated goal of economic, social and environmental development with urban and rural built environment as the study object, land use as the core, which is a public policy process undertaking space allocation of urban and rural development resources and putting it into practice through planning and planning management.
Urban-Rural Planning science contains a comprehensive property combining science, technology, humanities, arts and social studies with the urban and rural economic and human settlements as the study object, urban and rural land use and physical planning as the core, aimed at cultivating technical and management personnel with both architectural aesthetic abilities and engineering technical knowledge able to adapt to the social, economic and physical environment construction requirements.
Urban-Rural Planning subjectconsists of six research directions:
1. Urban, Rural and Regional Planning Theories and Methods: studying the Law of regional development of towns and villages, summarizing the theories and practices of urban planning history, exploring the urban and rural planning methodologies aimed at the status and objectives of urban and rural development, improving specific working methods, providing ideological, theoretical and methodological basis for the development of the Urban and Rural Planning.
2. Urban-Rural Planning and Design: following the concept of sustainable development, knowledge and skills required for the spatial planning and form design of urban and rural built environment. The research scopes include the principles and methods of the overall planning and detailed planning, principles and methods of rural planning, principles and methods of urban and rural spatial shape design.
3. Urban-Rural Planning Technical Sciences: studying the applications of all kinds of urban and rural physical environment science, infrastructure and engineering, mathematical model, simulation technology and information technology in urban and rural planning, including control and optimization techniques of urban and rural built environment, low-carbon and energy-saving technologies of urban and rural built environment, which provides a technical support for the development of Urban and Rural Planning Discipline.
4. Community and Housing Planning: focusing on the association study between housing planning and community development, including the basic theory, planning content and methods of urban and rural community development and housing policies, which provides a theoretical basis for the practices of community planning and housing planning.
5. Urban-Rural Heritage Conservation Planning: its study scope including two categories, material culture and human heritage in urban and rural areas, featured of interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary characteristics, requiring to integrate natural science and social science methods in research and practices, which is an integrated discipline focusing on both way of thinking and application practices.
6. Urban-Rural Planning Management: It is a comprehensive subject with its research scope including the statutory administrative procedures compiled by the urban, rural and regional planning, implementation management for urban and regional planning, as well as urban and rural planning regulations and policy systems, etc.
 
Architecture
The Department of Architecture was established in 1988, it provides a five-year curriculum since 1997, and our educational program for undergraduate students was accredited in 2014. Architecture is related to all human activities and it is not limited to technical concerns.It encompasses an incredibly wide range of other issues, including art, social and cultural perspectives. Our department is designed to guide students in the earlier years to take more introductory classes as well as the general subjects provided for all students. The core subjects include Architectural Design, in which students learn how to design buildings of various types, Environmental Design and Urban Design. In the final year, students are assigned a graduation project of complex function. The department developed “323+X” mode of training system for innovative talents. It has established an international network with universities and professional bodies worldwide for both academic and research collaborations. Excellent opportunities for short-term overseas exchange and internships are available to our students.
 
Introduction to Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering in Sichuan University

Building environment and energy application engineering is formerly for heating, gas, ventilation and air conditioning engineering which is renamed as building environment and equipment in 1988. And it was renamed as Building environment and energy application engineering in 2012 because the connotation of the professional was further broadened. This major is a major of engineering application which researches building environment and equipment, building energy application, building energy saving technology and makes indoor environment healthy and comfortable for people to work and live in.
 
Building environment and energy application engineering in Sichuan University prepared to build in 2008, and it is relying on the preponderant discipline of civil engineering, architecture and environment engineering in college of architecture and environment. This professional discipline which is made from scratch is developing steadily. And it is formed three levels of talent cultivation system. In 2010, this disciplines was authorized the master degree of heating, gas, ventilation and air conditioning engineering and began to recruit students, and in 2011, the doctor degree. Bachelor抯 degree program of Building environment and energy application engineering which authorized by the ministry of educationin 2011 began to recruit students in 2012.
 
The school mission of Research University is insisting on innovative education. The discipline with core of teaching promotes teaching by scientific research, improves talent quality, and finally makes high quality talent training base and undergraduate education platform. We are training senior innovative engineering and technical person who can adapt to social development needs, and has strong scientific research ability, engineering practice ability, innovation consciousness, and international competitiveness.
 
The main courses are: Higher Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, College English, College Physics, College Chemistry, Engineering Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer Theory, Fluid Mechanics, Electrical and Electronic Technology, Principle of Automatic Control, Basis of Mechanical Designing, Building Environment, Fluid Supply Pipework, Hot Swap Principles and Equipment, Cooling and Heat Sources of Building, HVAC, Heating Engineering, Gas Supply Pipework, Building Automatization, Building Environment Test Technology, Principle of Building Energy Efficiency, Community Energy Planning, etc.
 
This discipline focus on teachers teaching team construction. We have 9 in-service staff (excluding the experimenter) including 3 professors (2 doctoral advisors), 4 associate professors, and 7 have doctor degrees. All the teachers have overseas learning experiences. One is the leader of Sichuan academic and technical, and one is the backup.
After years of development, professional teachers and researchers have formed fixed and characteristic research direction:special construction and living environment optimization, building energy saving and renewable energy utilization, insulation building materials and green environmental building materials, new technology of HVAC, smoke and disaster control in underground engineering, indoor air distribution and living environment improvement and building energy use and regional energy planning. Our team undertakes more than 30 scientific research subjects including national support plan, natural science foundation and science and technology support plan of Sichuan province. We have published more than 200 scientific papers including more than 50 SCI papers. We have applied for more than 30 patens including more than 10 invention patents, and got a number of provincial awards.
 
In order to expand the academic influence, this discipline attaches importance to international academic exchanges activities, and knows the latest domestic and overseas academic trends timely. Now, we set up a wide range of academic contacts with many overseas universities including University of Illinois at urbana-champaign, University of Nottingham, University of Sydney, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Danish Technical University, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The academic contacts include exchanging visiting scholars, organization bilateral academic exchanges, scientific research cooperation and so on.We have established realize practice bases with China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., The Second China Railway Engineering Group Co., Ltd., Chengdu Institute of Architectural Design and so on. And to strengthen the students' practical teaching, we have hired great engineers of these companies as practice course instructors.
