What: With the advancements of internet and social networking technologies, people are connected to others more than ever but in the meantime are also inundated with massive amounts of information. In this two-part talk, I will describe two projects that help people manage their relationships as well as manage information. The first part of the talk describes a project called REACH, an intelligent, people-finding system that helps users to find someone in their social directory, especially those whom they do not fully remember or barely know. The second part of the talk describes a project called TIARA that combines state-of-the-art text analytic technologies (topic-based analysis) and interactive visualization to support topic-based visual summary and analysis. To conclude the talk, I will also discuss some of the future research directions in the space.
