Prof. Paul Werbos, Program Director for Control, Networks and Computational Intelligence at NSF and original inventor of BP Neural Networks, paid a visit to CCS from 4th August to 7th August, 2010. During his 4-day visit, Prof. Paul Werbos took a site visit to the Machine Intelligence Lab and met with the research members in the lab as well as members from the Chengdu Chapter of IEEE, Computational Intelligence Society. It was followed by a further discussion on the cutting-edge issues in the area of neural networks.
Prof. Paul Werbos is best known as the original inventor of backpropagation, as part of his Harvard PhD thesis, which was reprinted in full in his book the Roots of Backpropagation, Wiley 1994, along with his classic 1990 tutorial on backpropagation through time for Proc IEEE. He was one of the three original two-year presidents of the International Neural Network Society, and winner of the IEEE Pioneer Award for
developing fundamental algorithms for learning systems. He has also served as an elected member of the Administrative Committee (AdCom) of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS).
