On Oct. 11, 2010, Sichuan University conferred Honorary Professorship on Professor Jacek M. Zurada, Distinguished University Scholar of the University of Louisville. The conferment ceremony was held at the conference room at College of Computer Science and College of Software Engineering. Professor Yan Shijing, Assistant to the President of Sichuan University & Director of International Office, and Professor Zhang Yi, Dean of CCS & CSE attended the event and gave speeches. Also present at the ceremony were other leaders, faculty members and students from CCS & CSE.
At the ceremony, opening remarks were delivered by Professor Yan Shijing which was followed by an introduction to Professor Jacek M. Zurada by Professor Zhang Yi, Dean of CCS & CSE. Then Professor Yan Shijing awarded the certificate of honorary professorship to Professor Jacek M. Zurada. Followed this was an acceptance speech by Professor Jacek M. Zurada. In his speech, Professor Jacek M. Zurada said he was honored to receive this high recognition from Sichuan University and to be a member of SCU means recognition to both his own work and the two universities. Besides, it also conveys a wider message: the spirit of service, international cooperation and the spirit of bettering the world.
Professor Jacek M. Zurada now serves as a Distinguished University Scholar and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He has published over 350 journal
papers in the areas of neural networks, computational intelligence, data mining, image processing and VLSI circuits. He also has authored or co-authored three books, including the 1992 PWS text Introduction to Artificial Neural Systems
, co-edited the 1994 IEEE Press volume Computational Intelligence: Imitating Life
, the 2000 MIT Press volume Knowledge-Based Neurocomputing
, and co-edited six 2006 and 2008 volumes in Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science
. Dr. Zurada has received a number of awards for distinction in research, teaching, and service. In addition to several best paper awards, his honors include the 1993 Presidential Award for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity, 1997 Polish Ministry of National Education Award, 1999 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Golden Jubilee Medal, and the 2001 Presidential Distinguished Service Award for Service to the Profession. He is a Distinguished Speaker of IEEE CIS
and IEEE Fellow
. In 2003 he was conferred the Title of National Professor by the President of Poland. Since 2005 he is a Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences
, and serves as a Senior Fulbright Specialist in 2006-11.
