Under the leadership of Professor Su Xianyu, Academic & Technology Leaders in Sichuan Province and PhD supervisor, Institute of Three-dimensional Opto-Electronics Technology (3DOE) was set up in May 2000, the research objects include 3D imaging, machine vision, laser measurement, holography, Optical information processing. Up to now, many innovative achievements with independent intellectual property rights in the complex three-dimensional shape measurement technology have been made, and a serial of products of 3D optical sensing have been produced, which use optical methods to obtain 3D information of the tested object. Those products can be widely used in 3D data acquisition, virtual reality, television animation, industrial inspection, reverse engineering, medical examination, dressmaking and other fields with great significance.

3DOE Institute is engaged in teaching and research work on information optics and optical 3D sensor technology. In the past 20 years, the institute has got more than 10 projects granted by National Natural Science Foundation, 4 projects funded by the International Cooperation Foundation, a number of key research projects of Sichuan Province and other enterprises. The team is deeply studying in 3D shape measurement technology based on structured light (point, line and 2D fringe projection) and has developed its own intellectual property rights with multiple sets of equipments, a number of key technologies, 6 invention patents, over 300 publications (most of them indexed by SCI and EI). The research member of this Institute have published 6 academic works and teaching materials. Some independently developed measuring instruments have been exported to the United States. On 2003, the team won the Natural Science first award of Ministry of Education (MOE) of China. On 2004, they won the National Tech & Invention Second award of China. The academic leaders of this Institute, Professor Su Xianyu, has been invited to report their research achievements or acted as a member of the Academic Committee at many international academic conferences.
The tested object, which size is from 10mm to 10m, can be well non-contact digitalized with the relative accuracy of one thousandth and the measuring depth range from mm ~ hundreds of mm. The measuring instruments and the software system can also be customized.
Some developed system:
1. 3D sensing instruments based on point-structured illumination
The shoe last 3D shape automatic measurement instrument has been applied in scientific research, shoemaking and dressmaking manufacture by more than 30 domestic enterprises.
The 3D shape measurement instruments for rotating object based on point-structured light have been used for industrial inspection and digitization of parts and/or model.
2. 3D sensing instruments based on line-structured illumination & multi-sensors
• Based on line-structured light and multi-sensors, the foot type scanner has been developed, and it has also been used by customers, especially for customizing shoe design.
3. 3D sensing instruments based on 2D fringe projection
• 3D bottomhole pattern detection and analysis system has entered the international markets and purchased by Smith Drilling Company of USA, the world's largest manufacturer of drill bits.
4. 3D shape measuring instrument for dynamic process
• Now, 3D shape measuring instrument for dynamic process based on 2D fringe projection is being developed
• Vibration analysis for a vibrating drumhead.
• Deformation detection for a rotating fan.
Discipline construction and training of graduate students:
3DOE Institute has successively supported by the 985-project of science and technology innovation platform, 211-project of key disciplines construction and Sichuan University interdisciplinary research centre.
3DOE Institute also undertakes "Information Optics," "3D sensing and machine vision," "Optical Engineering Frontier", "Digital Image Processing", "Lighting and Lamps" and other postgraduate and undergraduate teaching courses.
24 Ph. D., 103 M. S. have been trained and earned their academic degrees in this institute, and right now there are 17 Ph.D and 55 M.S. candidates.
