On the morning of August 22, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden visited Sichuan University and delivered a speech in the new Multifunctional Conference Hall of West China Medical School on Huaxi campus of the University. 240 SCU teachers and students attended the lecture.
On behalf of the faculty and students of Sichuan University, President Xie Heping extended warm welcome to Vice President Biden’s visit. He said that Sichuan University is one of the Chinese universities boasting a long history. In 1985, the former US Vice President George Bush visited Sichuan University and gave a speech here. President Xie hoped that Vice President Joe Biden, as the second current U.S. Vice President visiting Sichuan University would have a successful trip in Chengdu.
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said that it’s his honor to give a speech at Sichuan University. Sichuan University has a number of distinguished alumni like zhu De, Ba Jin and others who have made outstanding contributions to the development of China in different areas.
Vice President Biden said that he had a successful visit in China. During the visit, he had positive and productive dialogues with the Chinese leaders. The U.S-China hight-level communications in the past 30 years have played significant role in developing U.S.–china relationships, strengthening mutual trust and better understanding. For this purpose, the U.S. and China have established the strategic and economic dialogue and other 60 dialogue channels to discuss regional and international issues of common concern.
He said that U.S. and China are working together to promote strong, sustainable and balanced economic growth. A prosperous China will have more demand for American products and at the same time provide America with more employment opportunities. China’s development and prosperity are in line with the interest of the U.S. . As the two major driving force of global economy, the United States and China should make further contributions to the global economic recovery and prosperity along with G20. The United States and China can also strengthen local and non-government communication and cooperation in innovation, humanities and other fields.
Vice President Biden said that as two great nations and key players in the global affairs, US-China cooperation will benefit people of both countries and the world.
Vice President Biden also answered questions from SCU students on how to reduce U.S. budget deficit and how to train and improve one’s public speaking ability.
