The “211 Project” Key Disciplines
  Sichuan University has implemented “leapfrog development project” which gives full play to integrated multi-discipline advantages, “rejuvenation program” for its time-honored disciplines, “mountain climbing program” for competitive disciplines aiming at forefront of world research, and “development program” for new cross-discipline innovation. It has been adhering to the guideline of “optimizing structure, encouraging inter-disciplinarity, promoting integration, highlighting priorities, promoting standard and cultivating independent features. In consolidating the existing  state key disciplines and  ministerial and provincial key disciplines, the university closely follows technologies that will influence the development trend of science and technology in the 21st century, such as information technology, biotech, nanotech, new materials technology, new energy and environmental technology. And it vigorously develops emerging-, marginal- and cross-disciplines, develops Phase II sci-tech platform of “985 Project”, encourages and promotes the cross-disciplinary integrations such as biomedicine-nanotech-material science-information technology integration, resource-environment-engineering integration, mathematics-physics-information integration, mathematics-economics-management integration, chemistry-chemical industry-pharmacology integration, so as to achieve significant breakthroughs in 1 to 2 disciplinary fields and step into world-class level. It also strengthens the development of the Phase II of the innovation base for philosophy and social sciences, encourages and promotes literature-history-philosophy, religion-social science, and international relations-ethnic studies-social sciences-regional economy integrations, so as to realize key breakthroughs to boost the overall development of the university.  In the meantime, it also strengthens development of law, management science, education science which are eligible for rapid growth, so as to accelerate the overall progress of liberal arts. In the fields of science, engineering and medicine, while strengthening development of existing competitive disciplines, the university endeavors to put more investment in “middle reaches disciplines” which have good foundation and great market demand, tries to increase a new batch of doctoral and master degree and professional degree programs.
 
Through the implementation of  key disciplinary projects of “10th Five Year Plan” and “211 Project”, the university follows ten aspects of requirements i.e. careful selection of development priorities, further clarification of disciplinary orientation, establishment of innovation task force, building of disciplinary bases, improvement of public platforms, cultivation of topnotch talents, struggle for important tasks, creation of milestone achievements, consolidation of international cooperation and improvement of management level, further promotes multi-disciplinary interaction and integration so as to develop a batch of the nation’s most wanted and promising emerging-, marginal- and cross-disciplines, speeds up the setup of famous, special, competitive disciplines and discipline clusters whose overall strength can reach first-rate domestic level and some of them can even reach or surpass world advanced level in terms of key research orientation. Consequently, the university can set up a disciplinary system featuring great strength in basic disciplines, broad prospect for applied disciplines, great vitality in cross-disciplines, continuous growth for emerging disciplines, and interactive promotion of basic and applied disciplines. The disciplinary system is coordinated with mutual support and infiltration of liberal arts, science and medicine and can better adapt to the mega trend of economic and social development as well as sci-tech progress. In summary, it will be a dynamic system fully embodying the connotations and traits of a first-rate research university.
