Sichuan University (SCU) is one of the national key universities directly under the State Ministry of Education (MOE) in China and one of the State “211 Project” universities receiving privileged government support in China’s Ninth Five-Year Plan period. The University went through two mergers, first with Chengdu University of Science and Technology (CUST), another national key university under the MOE in1994, and then with West China University of Medical Sciences (WCUMS) in 2000, a key university directly subordinated to the State Ministry of Health.

 

The history of the former Sichuan University can be traced back to 1896.  Before the merger, it was a key university under the Ministry of Education, with special strength in literature, history, mathematics, biology, etc.

 

The former Chengdu University of Science and Technology was founded in 1954. It was a key engineering university directly under the Ministry of Education.

 

The former West China University of Medical Sciences was founded by five Christian missions from Canada, United States and UK in 1910.  It was one of the best medical universities in China, directly under the State Ministry of Health.

 

The new Sichuan University has become one of the top key universities directly under the Ministry of Education of China.

 

The President in office is Prof. He-ping Xie, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
