发布时间 :2023年07月20日 来源 :CGTN 编辑 :王彦东

The Chengdu World University Games will kick off on July 22. Volunteers are an important part of the event. And at the taekwondo competition, held in one of Sichuan University's stadiums, international students have signed up to serve as volunteers. Our reporter GUO TIANQI talks to one of them, to see how preparations are going.

Of the 49 venues for the 31st Summer World University Games, 36 have been renovated and Sichuan University will be hosting the taekwondo competition.

It means many of the students here have the opportunity to participate in the event. One of them is Vanessa from Cameroon.

She is about to start her PhD course and is a native French speaker but also fluent in English.

EKO VANESSA EDITH PhD Candidate, Sichuan University "When they come here, they don't speak Chinese, so maybe they will be at ease when they see another foreigner to speak to."

Before the competition, full rehearsals are carried out many times with volunteers. Vanessa needs to be familiar with the location of every facility in the stadium, including learning to deal with emergencies.

She has been in Sichuan for nearly a year, and has been moved by the enthusiasm and tolerance of Chengdu people .

EKO VANESSA EDITH PhD Candidate, Sichuan University "I think athletes and people all over the world will be welcomed here. The people in Sichuan are always smiling, they will feel like home."

Being a competition volunteer is not easy. They need to work more than 12 hours a day during the competition while others enjoy their summer holiday.

And for most of them who are behind the scenes, there's no chance to feel the intensity of the game.

LAI ZHEJUNHAO Undergraduate Student, Sichuan University "I have been practicing Taekwondo for eight years and I am actually very interested in the game, but since I have chosen to volunteer, I have to take on this responsibility."

GUO TIANQI Chengdu, Sichuan Province "The venue has about 300 volunteers just like them. And it's not just about the excitement of the games, but also the willingness to help others, not to mention the 100 days of intense preparations that bring young people closer together. GUO TIANQI, CGTN, Chengdu, Sichuan Province."
