II. Introduction to Discipline
Control Science and Engineering is a discipline on theory, methods, technology and engineering applications of control and information processing. The objective of control science is to study common problems among various application domains, based on cybernetics, systems theory, and information theory. To be specific, for the sake of achieving the targets of control and information processing, how to build the model, analyze its internal characteristics and environmental information, and take optimal control and decision-making behavior/information processing method. Control Science evolves into control engineering with diverse application development, during integrating with various domestic domains. The subject of Control Science and Engineering is advantaged in integration of theoretical research and engineering practice, interdisciplinary, and combination of military and domestic applications, which are of considerable contribution to development of national economy.
 
This discipline of Control Science and Engineering is a class I subject master degree conferring station. The admissions of two class II subject master degree conferring stations, control theory and control engineering, detection technology and automation devices, are in the School of Electrical Engineering and Information, the other class II subject master degree conferring station, pattern recognition and intelligent system is in the College of Electronics and Information Engineering. The syllabus of Control Science and Engineering courses including not only public platform courses for class I subject, such as the mathematic foundations of control science and engineering, linear system theory, pattern recognition, but also classes oriented to individual class II subjects. There are nearly 20 master tutors in the discipline of Control Science and Engineering. They are backbones of this discipline, and undertake many national, provincial and municipal projects. In terms of scientific research bases, the discipline has Sichuan Provincial Key Laboratory of Information and Automation technology, and nearly ten distinctive and substantial research centers (groups) and can support graduate students cultivation. In addition, the discipline lays emphasis on developing comprehensive abilities of the postgraduates, personalized guidance and training, scientific research and dissertations, etc. This discipline also focuses on enhancing practical research skills of the postgraduates, letting students participated in various research works, so that they can own strong theoretical foundations and abilities to undertake scientific and technical work independently.
