讲座题目: The End of Eurocentrism: Postmodernism, Postcolonialism, Magical Realism
讲座摘要:
Before the Second World War, all literary movements or currents to gain international reach originated in and rom Europe. Since that war Europe has not generated a single –ism, in the arts or in literature, that in any significant sense has transcended national or linguistic borders. Instead, postmodernism, postcolonialism, and magical realism, the three “global” literary –isms that have marked the second half of the twentieth century, all originated outside of Europe. While proof, then, of what Cornel West has called the “decentering,” and Dipesh Chakrabarty the “provincializing” of Europe, these “post-European” –isms at the same time are also haunted by the spectre of the vanished center, as signaled by the necessary addition of a prefix, or in the case of “magic-al realism” of a distinctive ending to what in the European context needs no further qualification. This spectral haunting takes various forms at various stages of each of the –isms concerned, with a significant break for all three occurring in the mid-nineteen-sixties.
