讲座题目: Writing a World History of Literature
讲座摘要:
Ever since the nineteenth century there have been attempts to write literary world histories. Most of these originated from Europe, and had a distinctive European, or at least Western, bias. For the last ten years an international group of scholars originating from around the world has been at work writing a literary history of the world that aims not to be eurocentric, but to truly offer a balanced view of literature around the world. As you can imagine, this is not an easy task, and gives rise to many negotiations. I will highlight some of the difficulties, but also some of the opportunities, involved. I will pay particular attention to the implications or European literature, for part of which I am responsible, in such a context.
