The constant elasticity of substitution (CES) preferences are widely assumed in spatial economics and other related fields. Their property of constant markups is convenient to gain tractability, but it is not empirically supported. Recently, several interesting non-CES frameworks are established. Applying these frameworks to spatial economics, we find some surprising results. For example, additively separable preferences reveal that the definitions of the Home Market Effects in terms of firm share and wage rate are not equivalent. This utility setup can also disclose the multiple growth peaks observed in many countries. Binary preferences can explain why there are some export-only firms on the one hand, and some high-productivity firms do not export on the other hand.
